University Principal Preparation Initiative (UPPI)

The University Principal Preparation Initiative (UPPI) builds on 15 years of Wallace support research and experience the help establish what creates effective principals and design their “pre-service” training at universities. Western Kentucky University (WKU) was selected by the Wallace Foundation as one of seven universities around the country to share a $47 million grant for improving principal preparation.  The Wallace Foundation’s mission is to foster improvements in learning and enrichment for disadvantaged children and the vitality of the arts for everyone.  The foundation selected universities that serve districts with large numbers of disadvantaged students, whose schools could particularly benefit from effective leadership.

UPPI is a collaborative effort involving the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB), WKU as well as other local institutions, and the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative (GRREC) in reviewing the essential skills, dispositions, competencies, coursework, and clinical practices necessary for principals to be successful.
